Instagram users were faced with an unexpected bug at the close of the 2021 season for Christmas. People reported that they could not see who had viewed their Instagram stories from December. 29 to 2022. The complaints of not being able to see Instagram Story viewers trickled in through Twitter and then grew in intensity at the beginning of January. 3, 2022. In a statement from a Meta spokesperson on January. 4 Meta was “aware that some users had problems seeing their Instagram Stories view count and the list of users.” There were plenty of such complaints on Twitter in the early part of January 2022. Instagram users saying things like, “Instagram is being weird and isn’t showing me who’s seen my posts,” and “Why is Instagram not showing my stories’ views? ?”
After a few days of not being in a position to determine who was watching your gifts for Christmas or your hot chocolate creations, the Instagram Story count problem appears to be resolved. Elite Daily was informed by an Meta spokesperson on January 4, that the issue had been fixed and new Stories are expected to be back in normal operation. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
This wasn’t the first time when IG Story views were interrupted. In May 2021, a test led to a lot of Instagram users facing the same issue. they weren’t able to tell those who had seen their IG Story and only saw the word “views” at the bottom of their screen. After a test feature was implemented that would allow people to decide whether they would like to see “likes” in their posts that was introduced in May 2021 Instagram tested a similar “views” feature for Instagram Story in late 2020. You could not see how many views the Instagram Story received at the bottom of your mobile screen if you were in the small test group of Android and iOS users. Instead, you saw the words “views” or “seen by” and needed to tap on that in order to see an actual number of people who had seen it, along with a complete listing of the accounts who had watched your Story.
Instagram ended the test of eliminating the number of views in the bottom corner of your story in mid-May 2021. A Meta spokesperson explained that the company “[planto] correct the issue and restore the number of views for people” in an email sent to Elite Daily. Users may receive a fix “within the next week.”
Meta confirmed that the most recent glitch wasn’t related to the May 2021 problem and all users should now be able to see their Instagram Story viewer count as from January 5, 2022. If you’re still not seeing it, try restarting the application.
The 2021 May Instagram Story view count issue was made more complicated by allegations of Instagram “shadowbanning” accounts which spoke out against the escalating violence in Palestine in the time. Many accounts took to social media to complain that their Instagram Stories about the conflict received less views than others Instagram Stories. Elite Daily reached out to Meta at the time for comment on the reports, however, the company could not provide any comment on the reports at the date of publication.
Prior to the report of lower Story views for posts about Palestine, Instagram addressed a similar issue on May 5 and May 6 with content that did not show in Stories which affected users in Colombia and the United States, Canada, and East Jerusalem. Instagram told Elite Daily at the time that this issue was due to a bug that targeted all Stories that contained highlights, re-shared content and archives, and was not meant to impact Stories about a certain political issue.
Instagram said to Elite Daily at the time, “It was not our intent to completely remove posts on any cause in particular.” It’s important to remember that this was a separate issue from the claims regarding IG Stories about Palestine reportedly receiving less attention.
